SEPC is the regional leadership conference for council officers held each year. The conference brings together Southeast PanHellenic Councils to discuss and learn better ways to govern and recruit on campus.

ULM was one of several schools recognized by SEPC for their excellence in community service. ULM PanHellenic Council sponsored hands-on community service events, fundraising events and philanthropic programming projects, according to Coordinator of Greek Life Keith Hembree.

“The ladies of PanHellenic have always been hard workers,” said Hembree. “I am thrilled that they were finally recognized for all their hard work, and I congratulate them on their accomplishment.”

The Office of Greek Life is charged with advising the 16 nationally recognized fraternities and sororities at ULM, said Hembree. These Greeks are founded on principles of scholarship, leadership, community service and development of lifelong friendships. They still practice these fundamental principles in their pursuit of excellence.

ULM’s Interfraternity Council recognized at leadership academy

The Southeastern Interfraternity Conference's Leadership Academy recognized the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Interfraternity Council with five awards for Excellence, more than that of any other school represented at the conference.

(from left): Justin Lester of Pi Kappa Alpha and IFC Delegate, Nick Vinsion of Pi Kappa Alpha and IFC Vice-President, Keith Hembree ULM Coordinator of Greek Life, Brook Sebren of Kappa Alpha Order and IFC President, John Davis of Kappa Alpha Order and IFC Delegate, and Andres Granada of Kappa Sigma and IFC Delegate.

SEIFC is the regional leadership conference for council officers held in Atlanta each year. The awards were given at its closing banquet on Feb. 13 and recognized IFC excellence in these five areas:

Community Service and Philanthropy Award: recognizes the IFC that best provides initiates and new members with the opportunity to enrich their own lives by giving back to the campus or local community in a meaningful way and recognizes chapters who place an emphasis on hands-on community service and philanthropic events.

Educational Programming Award: recognizes the IFC whose programs provide education for both initiates and new member.

Interfraternal Relations Award: recognizes the IFC whose sponsored activities designed to promote fraternity unity and collaboration between councils/governing boards.

Excellence in Recruitment Award: recognizes the IFC that has well-designed, effective, organized, year-round recruitment programs that attract high-quality, motivated prospective members to the fraternity community.

Overall Fraternal Excellence Award: recognizes the IFCs that meet the 85 percent of the criteria in all 11 categories, which include risk management, educational programming, and chapter services.

ULM was the only university within the State of Louisiana for the second straight year to receive recognition at the awards banquet and was the only school in the Southeast to receive the Excellence in Recruitment Award, the most sought after award at SEIFC. During last year’s Leadership Academy in 2009, the council was recognized for Excellence in Educational Programming and Overall Fraternal Excellence.

“It’s encouraging to see how, after a year of hard work and dedication to both ULM and the community, the Interfraternity Council is gaining the recognition it deserves,” said ULM’s Coordinator of Greek Life Keith Hembree. “I am proud of this group of guys and how well they not only represent ULM, but the State of Louisiana.”

IFC President Brook Sebren added, “I’ve been active with the Interfraternity Council since the fall of 2007. In comparison to what we were as a council then, to now … it is truly amazing. The awards symbolize all the effort of the IFC and its respective fraternities, and the large strides made to better itself, the ULM campus, and the state.”

Sebren said those strides are about meeting the mission of ULM’s Greek organizations to teach young men and women to reach for excellence, provide them with the tools and resources to succeed in their undergraduate career, and build a support system that will last a lifetime.

The Office of Greek Life is charged with advising the 16 nationally-recognized fraternities and sororities at ULM. Traditionally, Greek organizations at ULM are strong contributors to the improvement of the university and the community, according to Hembree. Founded on principles of scholarship, leadership, community service and development of lifelong friendships, they still practice these fundamental principles in their pursuit of excellence.

    successful Songfest

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Office of Greek Life donated more than $1,200 in toys and clothing to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. The donation will be used to provide local underprivileged children with clothing and/or toys for Christmas.

Members of ULM's Greek organizations helped to provide more than $1,200 in toys and clothing to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program.

“With the rocky nationwide economy, Greek Life wanted to do its part and make sure local area children would have a Merry Christmas this year,” Greek Live Coordinator Keith Hembree said. “We feel that children are feeling the ill effects of the economy this year and wanted to do what we could to help promote the spirit of giving in Monroe.”

Money raised at the ULM Greek Songfest, held on Nov. 19, was used to help donate these gifts. More than 400 ULM students and faculty, along with members of the community, attended the event.

Kappa Delta Sorority won first place in the competition and performed their award-winning routine at The City of Monroe’s Christmas Tree Light Ceremony held on Dec. 5 at City Hall. Second place was given to Kappa Alpha Order and Third Place at the event was Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Many local businesses including Portico Bar & Grill, PieWorks, Best Buy, ULM Aramark, Afrocentrics, River Outfitters and the ULM Bookstore participated by donating gift cards to be raffled off during Songfest.

Supporters of Songfest include The City of Monroe, ULM School of Visual and Performing Arts, The Radio People, ULM NPHC Council, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, ULM Panhellenic Council and the ULM Interfraternity Council helped make the event a huge success by donating their time and resources.

“Greek Songfest is a great way for all 16 of ULM’s Fraternities and Sororities to show Greek Unity and support while participating in a little friendly competition,” Hembree said. “We hope to make the event an annual one at ULM for years to come.”
