Organization Facts
The year was 1920. It was the start of the decade, shortly after World War One, and a time of great prosperity for the country. Women were called dames, dolls, or the cat's meow. At the beginning of the decade, women still wore long skirts but the "Roaring 20s" brought a new look of short skirts and smartly coiffed shorter hair. Racial tensions were high and quotas set for immigrants coming into America. The Klan was very active during this period. The Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of black artists and writers in the US. On January 16, 1920, the Volstead Act became effective, heralding the start of Prohibition and on August 18th of the same year, Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification necessary for the final adoption of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to ever hit the United States would define the end of the decade-the Great Depression.
It was within this environment that Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was oft quoted to say "[In the ideal collegiate situation] there is a Zeta in a girl regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and principles, a good scholarly average and an active interest in all things that she undertakes to accomplish."
Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated making us the ONLY true brother-sister greek letter organizations.

Phi Beta Sigma is a predominantly African-American fraternity which was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The founders A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Inc. was created as an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than "apart From" the general community. They believed that each potential new member should be judged by his own merits rather than his family background or affluence...without regard to race, nationality, skin tone, or texture of hair. They wished and wanted their fraternity to exist as part of a greater brotherhood that would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we."
From its inception, the founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, the founders of Phi Beta Sigma held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the fraternity's motto, "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity."

The Helmet was, at one time, a symbol used by the Knight Commander of the Order. The badge is featured at the center of the crest, and the lions on either side represent different things each. The lion on the left, looking away, symbolizes "regardant", which encourages humbleness and an abstinence from several things in life. The lion on the right, facing inward, symbolizes "rampant," which encourages a boisterous life and one of want and need.
The design of the crest, featuring both lions, suggests that a balance is needed in life.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated was founded by 12 men during the Civil Rights Movement. Influenced by the times and by people and organizations such as Black Panthers, SNCC, Malcolm X, and Stokely Carmichael. Iota brothers participated in various protests and sit-ins throughout the city of Baltimore. The founders of the fraternity were themselves not of the norm as they were all non-traditional students. They were older than their peers, with many of them having served in the military, working full-time while attending classes, and having families. Based upon their ages, heightened responsibilities, and increased level of maturity, this group has a slightly different perspective than the norm for college students. It was this perspective from which they established the Fraternity's purpose, "the development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity, and Brotherhood among Men."
As Iota Phi Theta continues to grow and strengthen, so will its commitment to make meaningful contributions to society in general, with a particular emphasis in the African-American Community.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C., is a private non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare. The Lambda Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on October 26, 1974 on the campus of Northeast Louisiana University, now University of Louisiana at Monroe. Eleven young women, who saw a need for an organization to serve the needs of the campus and surrounding community, founded this chapter. The Monroe Alumnae Chapter, under the direction of President Rotena Russell, guided these eleven. There have been over 300 Deltas initiated through the Lambda Rho Chapter. Lambda Rho has continued to function in the community and on campus with its major projects including Adopt-a-School, tutoring, Delta Week, Breast Cancer Awareness, Go Green Campaign, Get Your Finances in Order, Voter Registration, Speaking Out against Genocide in Darfur, Domestic Violence Workshop, STD and HIV Awareness, and Sister to Sister and Sister to Brother forums. The chapter involvement in local community projects includes participation in Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, American Heart Association Heart Walk, Sickle Cell Walk, Great American Clean Up, and Muscular Dystrophy Association Ride n’ Stride. Since its chartering, the chapter has embodied the tenets of its National Leadership, clearly distinguishing itself as a public service organization that confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved.

A fraternity is defined as a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure. Delta Sigma Phi transcends that definition. Delta Sigma Phi is a family. We see past ethnic, social, and religious barriers to become a close knit group of brothers willing to help one another at any and all times. In addition, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and the city of Monroe is seen as our family. Through philanthropy and community service projects we strive to improve the aesthetics and quality of life of those living on our campus and in our town. Participating in the great American cleanups, charity events to benefit children with diseases in our area, and countless other campus events that our brothers give their all for the school that they love is no longer seen as a chore. Our brothers see these things as a part of life. Delta Sigma Phi seeks to give back to the school and community that gives so much to us. We aim to repay those who have given us the greatest gifts of all: education and brotherhood.

Organization Facts
Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., by seven men who recognized the need for strong brotherhood among African-American descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the Jewels of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.
The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students at Cornell. The Jewel Founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation based upon the principles of scholarship, fellowship, and good character.
